be remembered that this museum was originally build as a memorial to all of the thousands who died in world war i. i am not sure what you have thought about having a tunnel boring machine named after her, but she had a good sense of humor. she worked with a number of mayors and often entertaining them over a martini or two. i suspect, although it is not in my script that i was one way of insuring the (inaudible) of a permit application, most pleased with this tribute. she will not stay on a job until august. however, she will have to work extra hard to keep up with mom chung. in closing, i wish to salute the engineers and contractors and thank the hundreds of men and women who arrived with their lunch pails and their hard hats each day for making this subway a reality. thank you all very much and i think that it is fitting that we honor the past, and as we are building the future last year muni celebrated the 100th anniversary and we are the first public transit in the coun
the coaching staff and mark jackson can t be understated how much of an impact he s had on our team and might have and all the teammates you didn t see the other players making plays and others making plays. the practices that we went through and making each other better from day one. you know, last fall right after labor day the martha ford training camp and everyone showed up early commented to the task to what coach jackson with the vision of this happening. with the success we had this year it s only going to get better (clapping) we re excited about the process we have a great summer league team to prepare for next year. we have our sites set on bigger things go and the support you guys have shown us is amazing. i grew up in the nbc and i ve seen a lot of fan bases and this is the best fan base so far (clapping) so keep those yellow shirts crisis - as i represent the entire wires organization this is a amazing honor. and everyone that went into, you know, put this even
they had an idea. they took an ad out in the paper. they said the market street railway had all of these old cars. you could buy one without seats for $10 or with seats for $20. they had some suggestions with what people could do with the old horse cars and cable cars. they could be used for news stands, fruit stands, lunch stands, play houses, poultry houses, tool houses, coal sheds, conservatories and polling booths, etc. and it really is a testament to the market street railway s imagination that these cars essentially got used for all of these different purposes. here s a shoemaker in oakland. he opened up his little cobbler shop in an old horse car in his backyard. he locked it up at night with a long nail going through. he said, who s going to steal old shoes? a little bit more dramatic, a man named james mcneal took four old horse cars and put them on a pontoon to make a house boat near bell very deer. he called it the nautilus. he rent it out to people, tricked it all
carville by the sea today. we ll look at slides. he ll tell us about the history of the outerlands, previously uninhabitable area of the city. we will invite your questions. so, please, you in the audience if you have questions, let us know. woody can help. thank you, woody, for being here. thank you. so we re going to talk a little bit about carville by the sea today. carville was a unique community out on the edge of san francisco. as you can see by the slide, it was made up of old street cars and horse cars that people used for residences, bars, restaurants, clubhouses. it had its peak in the 1890 s, around the turn of the century. i should mention that you see this is a color shot. none of these photos were originally colorized. i essentially put color in there for the book just to make it pop a little bit. so don t be fooled. before we get started i d like to talk about the organization that i helped found 10 years ago, the western neighborhoods project dedicated to
youth commission and the young people in san francisco, i would like to thank the mayor and all those who have worked and collaborated in bringing jobs to the young people in san francisco. thank you.
