The three incumbents seeking reelection to the Naperville Unit District 203 school board say they re proud of their decision to reimburse taxpayers a total of $10 million in unanticipated surplus funds.
But in recent Daily Herald endorsement interviews, all six of their challengers questioned whether the money could have been better spent on other priorities amid the COVID-19 pandemic, such as expanding in-person opportunities or addressing learning gaps.
Board President Kristin Fitzgerald, Vice President Donna Wandke and board member Charles Cush are vying to retain three of the four open seats. Running against them in the April 6 election are Amanda McMillen, Christi Helm, Thomas Andrew Binkowski, Robert Reed, Adam Russo and Bill Eagan.
About 30% of students and 65% of staff at Naperville School District 203 have registered to be part of the district’s surveillance COVID-19 testing program ahead of the district’s hybrid return to the schools, district officials said Tuesday. Earlier in January, district officials said they were aiming for 70% participation.

Interest is high in the school board elections this spring, as competitive races have emerged across DuPage County.
In several school districts, the list of candidates who filed nominating petitions by last week s deadline amounts to at least twice the number of board seats available.
Indian Prairie Unit District 204 has been leading the pack since early in the weeklong filing period, with 11 hopefuls vying for four open seats. But candidate fields have grown substantially in many other districts, setting the stage for highly contested races in Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200, Naperville Unit District 203 and more.
