While preserving the city’s past, the Charles City Historic Preservation Commission is also looking to the future with the help from the younger generation.
Commission Chair Carol Frye told city council members Monday night that later this month they’ll begin interviewing prospective students currently in eighth grade who will be ninth graders when they join the organization this fall. Community Development Director Mark Wicks says the student participation will be similar to the Chamber of Commerce Junior Ambassador program and will eventually include a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior student.
Frye added they also want students to learn the importance of taking an active role in their community. The Historic Preservation Commission is also in the process of developing a new website Wicks says will be a valuable new resource to preserving Charles City’s heritage.
