MUNCIE, Ind. Lindsay Fuller will tell you starting a small business is terrifying. She should know; she’s done it three times.
“I always wanted to have something for myself, something I could be creative with,” Fuller said. “But yeah, it’s always really scary.”
Entrepreneurship is perilous, an act that requires composure in the face of often unknowable risk. A study conducted for Bloomberg estimated eight out of 10 startups fail within their first 18 months.
An appropriate metaphor for plunging into a new business endeavor might compare the stunt to dangling 20 feet above the ground, unsecured and inverted, clinging to what amounts to a sturdy scarf. In Fuller’s case, however, that comparison serves better as a job description.
