Nelson McCausland: Ulster hymn-writers deserve recognition as much as our poets

The image of the poet Seamus Heaney will be used in Northern Ireland centenary branding and last month it was reported that a collection of previously unseen drafts of his poems had come to light in documents purchased by a Cambridge University college. There is a Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen s University Belfast and there is a Seamus Heaney cultural centre in Bellaghy. Most countries around the world celebrate their poets. That is especially true with poets who have received international recognition and, of course, 25 years ago Heaney was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. But Christian poets and hymn-writers from Northern Ireland are generally overlooked, even though some well-known hymns, which are sung around the world, were written by Ulster folk.
