Moderate Tropical Storm ANA has caused damage in the Southern Region where M1 Road and Chapananga Bridge on the Chikwawa-Mwanza Road have been cut-off.
The contractor that worked on the first phase of the Chikwawa – Chapananga Road and the Chapananga Bridge, PLEM Construction plans to consult the Roads Authority (RA) regarding concerns raised on the quality of their work.
Yesterday vice President Saulos Chilima faulted the firm for what he called substandard work especially on the road from the Chapananga Bridge.
Chilima has ordered the contractor to redesign the road.
The vice president is currently inspecting ongoing development projects across the country to compare desk reports with the situation on the ground.
According to the Managing Director of PLEM Construction Mohan Krishna, the road works on the stretch from the bridge are not under their contract.

Blantyre, Mana: The country’s Vice-President, Dr. Saulos Chilima has ordered the contractor for the Chikwawa-Chapananga-Mwanza Road to redesign the road to a better quality and more durable one.
Chilima gave the order on Monday during an inspection tour of Nsanje-Marka Road as well as the Chikwawa-Chapananga-Mwanza Road and bridge where he observed that the quality of the road was poor.
“We have travelled on the Chikwawa-Chapananga-Mwanza Road; three things to say: the bridge looks quite solid but the road is substandard by my own assessment because they are saying this is not the same grade as what we saw in Tsangano (Ntcheu) and what we have also seen in Nsanje.
