A civil lawsuit challenging the Brown County Jailâs policy regarding the dispensing of prescribed medications that are also controlled substances has reached a settlement.
Filed on behalf of Chantel Voeltz-Schmit and seeking to include other inmates at the jail, it was dismissed last week, according to court documents.
Voeltz-Schmit filed the lawsuit in November through her attorney Jim Leach of Rapid City. That was shortly before she was sentenced in Brown County and ordered to serve time on a drug-related charge. According to court documents, she served eight days and has since been released.
At issue were prescribed medications that Voeltz-Schmit takes that are considered controlled substances. She wanted to ensure she received those medications while in custody.

Chantel Voeltz-Schmit filed the lawsuit on behalf of herself and any others detained at the jail not allowed prescription medications that are also controlled substances, according to court documents. The lawsuit sought a temporary restraining order so she could get her medications.
Voeltz-Schmit was sentenced in Brown County on Oct. 30 to 30 days in jail on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. The civil lawsuit was filed that day in federal court by Rapid City attorney James Leach.
