how big of a deal is this for the democratic ic establishmen? it s a big deal. they were all in on this race. it was a sleepy special election happening this summer. very low turnout. but in the last several weeks the establishment, the full weight of the party has been behind chantel brown, the local democratic chair. she was campaigning on helping president biden s agenda. the white house stayed out of this race but the president was front and center in this. who is going to be sent to help and be an ally not an antagonist. that s where nina turner comes in. she was a member of the squad. look, i ll help the president when needed but i need to push him in a progressive way. she had a ton of help from the outside, too. bernie sanders as well. this is one of the latest examples of how the moderate wing of the party, the establishment wing of the party, the president s wing of the party, really is being victorious in these elections. but listen last night to nina turner as she concede
candidates. donald trump controls the republican party, you want his endorsement. but don t fool yourself into thinking that donald trump is about anyone else other than donald trump. donald trump didn t want two straight losses is why he spent money on carey. but that thing will motivate him to spend money. on the democratic side you had people, national figures, coming into that district endorsing nina turner. you also had a national future coming in to endorse brown. i don t think that played a part. i think that these races are localized efforts. if you look at eric adams she had a very nationally focused campaign. but it was the local endorsements i think in the democratic party that go a long way. i think that is what the democrats need to do in 2022. even though this was seen as a win for the more establishment moderate democrats, progressives also have had a win this week. this effort led by cori bush on the eviction moratorium, now the
so it s not that voters don t support her. but when put up against brown, i think brown just resonated more for that part of cleveland. do you think it s that district or broader? i think it s a broader trend. because in the democratic party you at least have a battle going on about how who s going to control it, and it s about ideology. you ve got the sanders wing, which turner represented versus the biden wing, shall we say, the moderates, jim clyburn very unfluently here. and the moddats have been winning. in the republican party you don t have any battle at all about ideology. it s all about whether you are beholden to the orange god king or not. and which is ideological. and there aren t many who are nontrump. there s a guy craig schneider who just announced in pennsylvania for the senate race who s explicitly nontrump. but those candidates are hard to find. the republican who won in
white house reversed course under pressure, although it s legally dubious whether it s going to succeed. [ laughter ] but that shows that they still carry a lot of weight. there s two big takeaways from that episode. first of all, the squad. so cori bush, aoc, others have shown how they can marshall that power within capitol hill to get policies done immediately as they have this narrow majority in the house and the white house and the senate as well. but at the same time, there will be practical effects from a moderate such as ms. brown winning last night in ohio because we can have the takeaways in these off-year elections for what they portend next year. nancy pelosi has a very narrow majority in the house, and if you re nancy pelosi, do you want a nina turner as one of the few members of your very thin majority or shantel brown. i think nina turner would ve
11th district. brown was endorsed by congressman james clyburn and by hillary clinton and defeated progressive hopeful nina turner who had been endorsed by senator bernie sanders and congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez. joining us now to discuss this is cnn political director david chalian and this was fascinating to watch. the first thing i want to do is actually play what nina turner said in her concession speech to give people a sense of how nonkumbaya this moment is. let s listen. see, we didn t lose this race. evil money manipulated and maligned in this election. it took evil money to come in here and do this. but i swear to you that as sure as there is a god in heaven, sister turner going to continue working with every fiber of her being until true justice reigns.
