Percival Everitt invented the first coin-operated vending machine in 1883.
His machines dispensed envelopes and post cards and were popular in train stations and post offices throughout London.
By 1888,
Thomas Adams attained the American patent rights of Everitt s vending machine. Adams machines dispensed chewing gum, and he placed them at train stations throughout New York City.
