This year's Songkran holidays might have been a bit livelier with return of at least some fanfare and a trickle of foreign tourists, but one thing certainly has continued to put a damper on the festive mood the government's grim, if not misguided, obsession with counting road accidents and deaths throughout the holiday period.
The government is urging full compliance with Covid-19 control measures outlined by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), including the ban on water-splashing during the Songkran holidays, to help prevent cases from spiralling out of control after the long break.

BANGKOK: Critics accused the government of allowing public health services to collapse after three people were found dead on Bangkok streets, one infected with COVID-19 and left lying on the road for many hours before an ambulance finally arrived.

The infected man collapsed in the morning and later died as rescuers tried to revive him. He lay on the road for 12 hours.
