[inaudible conversation] book tv recently visited capitol hill to ask members of congress what theyre reading this summer. I hope to finish a couple books, first of all im reading freedoms task which was given to me by senator roy blunt and this is a book that is about the dome being put on the Capital Building precivil war but what i found is especially interesting is as i get into the book of focus on the House Chamber and Senate Chamber and how those were added to the original Capital Building and one of the main proponents of that is Jefferson Davis so while we are approaching the civil war, we have Jefferson Davis really helping our country, helping build a Capital Building which would serve our entire country and we know later that he became the president of the confederacy so that the book im hoping to get through, i started it and i need to finish it. I also want to read about destiny and power which is the book by john meacham on george hw bush. I would like to get that done t
You can watch all previous after words programs on our web site, booktv. Org. Host margie raz of regnery, what are some of the books you have coming out this fall . Guest we are so excited. When its an Election Year, regnery likes to get into things and try to connect with all the people who are thinking, what is going on in this crazy Election Year. So we have two big books coming, this one in late july, one in late august. And these are really geared for the election crowd. But were moving into the general election season now instead of the primaries, so were focusing our sights on not surprisingly Hillary Clinton. So the first book is a big book with a big author, Dinesh Dsouza. Hes bringing out a book called hillarys america. The subtitle is Something Like the most frightening book youll read this year, and its coming alongside a documentary which hes typically done with his last big book. This one is going to open in, i think, 2,000 theaters across the country on the same weekend
So the debate is obamacare or the way its always been. I reject that. I want Free Health Care for all. And i wanted to break the kind of, you know, duality that we sometimes get trapped in and the kind of framing of issues that i think is wrong. Schools is something, as you know, that im passionate about. So the framing of the debate is those who want to privatize and crush the unions and measure education by a single metric and those who like the status quo. I reject that. Be i hate the status quo in public education. But my answer is not to go in the direction of Corporate School reform. So thats why the book was written, and its a short book, its a punchy book, so its kind of a manifesto. You can kind of tack it up on the door of the executioner. Host well, thats kind of where i wanted to go which is whats the Historical Context of the word manifesto. Guest yeah. Well, for me, its something that you put a nail in the door of the king whos been running roughshod over the people, and
I just want to salute you and your public work in uniform, military uniform as well as civilian clothes. I heard you say you were committed to protecting whistleblowers. I was wondering what your definition was. Im thinking of edward snowden. My dear brothers and sisters, chelsea manning, my dear brother jeffrey sterling. Two in jail, one outside of the country. Would you define them as whistleblowers or in a different way . Dr. West i put you on the spot too much. Very penetrating question. I appreciate your reflections. I would define whistleblowers as those individuals who come forward consistent with the statutes for the appropriate authorities with the appropriate clearances to adjudicate. Its my understanding that our government has designated mr. Snowden and before him, private manning to be not whistleblowers. To be in one case someone accused of violating the military justice and someone accused of violating federal law. I believe there is a pathway through the chain of comman
