Sydney Festival 2021: Poem for a dry river bed explores a nymph s laboured creation of a river bed

★★★★ Reviewed January 6 The work begins with darkness, silence and undifferentiated shapes, slowly awakened by insects, dim light and the sound of slow breath. A crouching figure slowly emerges from a bed of clay and, in gathering light, the sounds turn to stertorous effort, rising in intensity as the labour of extending the clay bed across the performing area grows. Jane Sheldon s performance of Poem for a dried up river combines opera, poetry, physical theatre and art. Credit:James Brickwood Singer/composer Jane Sheldon s Poem for a dried up river is a musico-dramatic setting for two singers and small ensemble of a poem by Alice Oswald describing how a statue of a Roman water nymph made of bone tries to summon up a river .
