NCC passes act for 5G network investments

The National Communications Commission (NCC) yesterday passed a draft act that it said would encourage the corporate sector to invest in and adopt innovative use of 5G networks. The draft establishment and management of telecommunications networks for mobile broadband act is to be forwarded to the Executive Yuan for final review and ratification. The draft act includes measures for corporations to apply for network eligibility, network installation, channel management and frequency usage certificates, NCC Deputy Chairman Wong Po-tsung (翁柏宗) said. It is in line with the Executive Yuan’s policy of allowing 5G vertical applications on the designated 4.8 to 4.9 gigahertz frequencies, also

Carry phones, satellite devices when hiking: NCC

People should carry mobile phones as well as satellite communication devices to ensure their safety when hiking in the mountains, the National Communications Commission (NCC) said at the weekend. Safety issues facing Taiwan’s growing mountaineering enthusiasts came under scrutiny following the death of former Pegatron Corp vice president Tsai Chin-kuo (蔡進國). The altitudes of mountains in the area range from 300m to 1,728m above sea level. Rescuers from the New

Last year, the nation had 36,000 payphones, the commission said. An NCC report shows that Taiwan’s first public payphone was installed in 1947, while the biggest wave of installations happened in 1981, when the government ran a nationwide campaign with the slogan: “A telephone in every village.” As mobile

NCC warns of stiff fines for helping Chinese OTT firms

Companies or individuals that help Chinese over-the-top (OTT) operator iQiyi solicit commercials from Taiwan could be fined up to NT$5 million (US$180,532) for contravening the Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area (臺灣地區與大陸地區人民關係條例), the National Communications Commission (NCC) said yesterday. The Chinese operator was forced to close its office in Taiwan after the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2020 amended the “List of the Prohibited Commercial Engagement Practices in the Taiwan Area,” which bars companies or people from selling services of Chinese OTT operators or acting as their agents in Taiwan.
