The tribe is especially concerned about land application of manure that it fears could lead to high phosphorus levels in the soil and high nitrate levels in the water threatening wild rice, mussels and fish, and adding to existing E. coli contamination.
The county approval was especially important because the City of Detroit Lakes is also considering a $250,000 ARPA contribution towards the Food Pantry project, and several township boards may also give towards the cause, but it seemed everybody was waiting for Becker County to lead the way.
