The formal opening of the UAE embassy in Israel, which they did on Wednesday, is a tacit acceptance of the fact, if one was still needed, that the dispossessed Palestinians are no longer the conscience of the Arab world. And also that the Star of David fluttering over the Mosque of Omar no longer evokes visceral passions among Bedouin statesmen whose oil bonanza catapulted them to the top of the hierarchy of Muslim nations. It also drives the final nail in the coffin of the so called two-state solution and pretty much leaves the Palestinians on their own if they still wish to pursue the dream of return. It was, after all, the Gulf states’ petrodollars, along with generous dole outs from the European Union (EU), that made Chairman Arafat’s Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) the world’s best funded revolutionary movement.
The comment was jarring: Not only has Abbas’ legitimacy been significantly in question since his four-year term expired more than 12 years ago, but he recently announced yet another postponement of long-overdue elections in the territory he purports to lead.

On June 8, 1995, Larry King interviewed Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, PLO leader Yasser Afrafat and Jordan’s King Hussein together on the same CNN show, an experience he later called “one of the most historic nights I ever did.”
“As [former US secretary of state Henry] Kissinger told me later, I was doing world diplomacy on the air,” King, who died on Saturday at 87, would recall. “So I felt, here’s this little Jewish guy from Brooklyn, in the volatile Middle East, and I’m interviewing all three of them at the same time.”
