It was the first genocide in the 21st century. Ruth Messinger was the executive director of the American Jewish World Service at the time. She told AJWS’ staff and board: “Our own people have suffered what the Darfuri people are now suffering. We were raised to promise ‘never again,’ and this is our chance to act on that promise.”
