Uncertainty remains over how Pottawatomie County will go about finalizing its draft regulations governing solar energy farms.
County Planner Stephan Metzger sought guidance from county commissioners Monday, over how to best proceed. Commissioner Pat Weixelman says he believes the draft as written currently takes away local control.

Metzger says some of Weixelman’s concerns were actually addressed by planning and zoning. He spoke to a concern in the regulation regarding ground cover where the panels would be placed.

Pottawatomie County officials took the first step Monday toward a possible remodel or replacement of the Emmett Fire Station.
Fire Chief Jared Barnes presented a scope of work needing to be done on the building which is pretty extensive. He says a building inspector has determined that the bones of the building are still workable with a potential remodel.
“One thing he did mention was the walls. We haven’t looked at the walls but do know that on one south wall we did have some termite damage. The building’s got quite a bit of age and definitely needs something done,” he said.

Pottawatomie County commissioners approved two rezoning requests Monday for future residential developments with some contingencies.
A 30 acre tract at the southeast corner of Elm Slough and Flush Roads will be rezoned from agricultural to ag-residential. Access into a proposed subdivision hasn’t been determined and will require traffic and drainage studies, according to County Planner Stephan Metzger, based on a protest petition filed by eight of the 18 nearby property owners.
Pottawatomie County Commissioner Dee McKee says she wants more public awareness surrounding alternate routes to and from the new Oliver Brown Elementary School in Blue Township.
Access to the new school from Hwy 24 is somewhat limited and McKee says a major traffic incident could cause some major disruptions.
“I think it’s going to be essential that we look at that and the Green Valley Road that’s two lanes wide that needs some work on the side of the bridge and there may be a day where something gets closed. They need to know the route around,” she said.
