The first half of the 2024 Legislature has been filled with much drama too much for the University of Hawaii. Granted, several key senators in recent years inject now-expected yet unwarranted antagonism each session but in the past month, they’ve attempted overreach as UH prepares to reset with three new regents on its policy board, and crucially, to select the next UH president.
A state Senate committee Tuesday voted against recommending confirmation of University of Hawaii Board of Regents interim member and Chair Alapaki Nahale-a for a second term as a regent.
Despite many testifiers’ pleas to include University of Hawaii faculty, students and staff as well as community members on the selection committee that will choose the next UH system president, the UH Board of Regents opted Thursday to stick with a “committee of the whole” composed exclusively of the 11 regents.
