Legal experts say the Andrews government’s controversial pandemic laws will include the most rigorous safeguards against human rights abuses in the nation.
But the Victorian Independent Remuneration Tribunal has rejected the proposed retirement income boost, saying it would be out of step with public expectations to reintroduce a scheme that could result in an MP receiving $1.1 million in pension payments after serving 12 years in Parliament. The Andrews government supported the tribunal s decision.
MPs elected before 2004 made voluntary contributions from their salary throughout their career in exchange for a yearly payment once they retired or lost their seat.

The pension, available to MPs who served at least two terms, ranged from annual payments of $84,000 to $126,000, depending on how long the member served and what parliamentary positions they held.
