February 3 is the anniversary of the day the music died, referring to the 1959 plane crash that killed rock and roll pioneers Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens. Don McLean coined the term the day the music died in his 1971 release, American Pie. McLean s song became a classic, listed in the RIAA Songs of the Century Top 5 and placed in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. It s also the longest song to ever reach #1 on Billboard charts.
Don McLean and country a capella group Home Free also released a brand new version of American Pie today. Scroll down for the video.
