to come back with his memory refreshed by the testimony of the other witnesses. so yes, this is very much of a trying to do smoke and mirrors and divert from the fact of what happened. it s immaterial at this point. the public hearings this week are just going to double down on that fact and knock down every gop talking point. let me go to some of the politics of this. i said at the beginning of this segment, sarah, polls show six of the democrats could beat president trump in the general election if it were at the time these polls were taken, which is right now, including michael bloomberg, former mayor of new york, who hasn t even declared. now, a lot of people are saying that bloomberg is looking at the centrist lane that vice president, former vice president biden has. i know both these gentlemen pretty well, both were at my
locations are locked in and campaigns have been on the ground there for over a year working hard to organize it, so i think this is a challenge, but listen, i don t think anybody should underestimate mike or the team that he will put around him. let s look at this recent new york times poll of head-to-head matchups. biden was barely beating trump and other candidates that trailed him. does bloomberg have a point that the current field isn t strong enough? i think a lot of people and centrist democrats are very concerned about joe biden. i heard the vice president say in that clip i m want taking this personally. he should take it very personally, it s personal. this is coming out of a real perception that he s a weak front-runner, but on the other hand, you know, first of all, this lane. the centrist lane is so crowded already. ink the person that this helps the most frankly is elizabeth warren and the person that he s out to stop along with bernie sanders is elizabeth warren and
do think there is a real fear there. jonathan please weigh in. can i say one thing? look, most people would agree that there are too many cars on the political highway as it relates to this democratic presidential primary. most people would agree that the lanes are pretty packed with people who have the individual lanes. i m not sure what the mayor s lane will be on the highway at this point. we have the progressive lane, the centrist lane, i think we have the socialism lane, and the fact of the matter is we have cars exiting the highway. and that lane is pretty packed because they will not make it to iowa, new hampshire, or south carolina. so i m not sure where the mayor would find his lane on the highway to get his car down the road. i don t think it s a threat to biden yet because he does not have the deep relationships that vice president biden has particularly in the african-american community. he s coming in in a chopper pardon? i said, that s why he s coming in in
the centrist lane. right. i think that i don t see him as being disruptive to this race perhaps as some people do, because it s not like he comes in and gets coronated, right. he would have to be competing with these other people. pete buttigieg is really on the rise and is doing really well in iowa, for example. and so i think the idea that he is going to somehow come in, presumably he would be attacking warren, right, and what does that who does that help? you know, if he s trying to take, you know, trying to take out warren, what he is basically doing, let s assume he even he garners some of those votes. now what he is doing is dividing that moderate vote even more, right? so that actually helps warren. and furthermore, just because you re the person making the attacks doesn t mean that you re the person who even assuming the attacks are successful, which i don t think they probably would be, but if they were, it doesn t mean that you re the one that gets the
last night. he s been making all kinds of calls. joining us now the new york times reporter who broke this story alex burns. congratulations. you broke this wide open yesterday afternoon. why? what does michael bloomberg see today that he didn t see a few months ago? well, the biggest change from march when he announced he would not run for president is back then he looked at this race, did a lot of polling and concluded joe biden is just too popular. he is dominant in that centrist lane and there s not a space for a guy like me. that s not what bloomberg sees today. he has been doing consistent polling in recent weeks to examine this race, to see if there s an opening, to check in on the state of the field. he sees biden as much, much weaker than the start of the year. though not by any means a cooked goose. and he looks at the lefty candidates in the primary and says i don t think people can win the general election here. some of this may be bloomberg
