Boxing Day is going early this year.
Many Quebec merchants among them fashion footwear retailer L’Intervalle and clothing store chain Tristan are moving up their year-end specials following Tuesday’s announcement of a two-week shutdown of non-essential businesses starting Dec. 25. Others, like electronics chain Centre Hi-Fi, had already begun advertising a “Boxing Day sale before Christmas” last weekend.

Executives and industry experts who spoke to the Montreal Gazette Wednesday said the shutdown, while largely expected, dials up the pressure on several retailers to sell merchandise accumulated during the past few months to make way for new styles.
