MPs block debate of bill to ease Malawi s strict abortion law

3 Min Read BLANTYRE (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Lawmakers in Malawi blocked debate on Thursday of proposals to ease abortion restrictions in the southern African country, where unsafe terminations contribute to one of the region’s highest rates of maternal mortality. Mathews Ngwale, head of the parliamentary health committee and the bill’s main sponsor, vowed to present the draft law again in the weeks or months ahead after members of parliament (MPs) rejected a motion to discuss the controversial proposal. The abortion bill, which was first drawn up nearly five years ago, has met strong opposition from church groups in the mainly Christian country including Roman Catholic bishops, who organised street protests when it was announced in 2016.

Abortion Bill in Parliament on Thursday as Malawi as churches oppose

March 10, 2021 Chipambano Mbewe – Nyasa Times 14 Comments The Malawi Parliamentary Health Committee says it will present and move a motion of the Termination of Pregnancy (TOP) bill on Thursday, March 11 2021  in the Parliament which will also be presented as a Private Member’s Bill respectively in the face of opposition from faith groups. Ngwale: To table the bill Pro-choice campaigners believe almost half of the 193 MPs in the national assembly back the bill, but there is strong opposition. If passed, the termination of pregnancy bill would allow abortions when a woman’s mental or physical health is in danger, in cases of rape  and incest, and when there are serious foetal abnormalities.
