Mass Covid-19 testing will be ramped up in Samut Sakhon this week, as the province prepares to ease disease control measures put in place after it became a hotspot of the latest coronavirus outbreak late last year.
Testing has been ongoing in the province since December, and authorities there are hoping they can finish testing at-risk individuals by the end of the week, so the province can begin easing coronavirus-related restrictions.
Apisamai Srirangsun, assistant spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said proactive screening and mass testing are the only ways through which authorities can determine if Samut Sakhon can be reclassified as a low-risk zone.

BANGKOK (ElevenMedia Group/ANN): The Thai government plans to issue documents to undocumented Myanmar workers for permanent residency, Ye Min from the Aid Alliance Committee in Thailand said on Wednesday (Jan 20).
“The Thai government plans to issue documents to undocumented Myanmar workers who have no permanent residency in Thailand. But the price is very high. We urge the Thai authorities to reduce the cost, ” said Ye Min.

The pandemic continues to ravage tourism operators as the number of tour companies withdrawing their licences reached its peak in December, while 65-70% of outbound agents closed indefinitely amid the tight border restrictions.
Around 10% of outbound operators gave up their licences with the Tourism Department, particularly after the resurgent virus hit local communities on Dec 15, said Suthiphong Pheunphiphop, president of the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA).
BANGKOK, Jan 17 (The Nation Thailand/ANN): The number of Covid-19 cases in Samut Sakhon province rose to over 4,000 cases on Saturday after the Provincial Health Office conducted proactive screening in factories.
As of 5pm, the number of patients increased by 335 to 4,359 989 Thais and 3,370 migrant workers. Of the total, 636 Thais and 316 migrant workers were hospitalised.
Separately, the provincial agencies opened a fourth field hospital at Nadi subdistrict Municipality in Muang Samut Sakhon district which can treat 350 patients. As most patients at the first field hospital in the province s Central Shrimp Market had been discharged, we would undertake a cleaning operation before reopening the market at the end of January, the provincial officials said.
