– Over the weekend, the Paso Robles High School wrestling team won CIF Division 2, beating Hanford High School by over 20 points. Paso Robles had three champions, two-second placers, and will now be taking a total of 11 student-athletes to the Central Section Championships this weekend in Bakersfield.
SELMA â When Clarissa Moreno stepped back onto the field at Margie Wright Diamond at Fresno State memories of softball success quickly returned to her mind.
As a member of the Selma High Bears, Moreno helped lead the Bears to two straight Central Section Championships in 2017 and 2018. Â On May 8, Moreno returned to the same venue this time donning the Orange of the Boise State Broncos, where she is currently in her freshman season.
âIt is so awesome dreaming about this moment. As a little kid I always wanted to play on this field,â Moreno said. âEven after playing in Valley championships, it is cool to be back.â
A few sporting events the last few weeks captured my attention.
First, we saw Selmaâs football Bears stage a valiant, gutsy second-half comeback to pull ahead of Kingsburg in the annual rivalry game. Then the Vikings kicker sealed a two-point victory for Kingsburg, 17-15 in the final seconds.
A day later I watched as Fresno Pacific University, coached by Selma High grad George Rodriguez, lost a 4-3 heart-breaker against Academy of Art from San Francisco in NCAA womenâs tennis.
Both of those outcomes disappointed me because my heart was with the Bears and the Sunbirds for personal reasons. I have coached at Selma High, my daughter graduated from there and in general I have followed Bears sports for many years.Â
