The first US Ambassador to Khartoum in 25 years, John Godfrey, denies that junta leader Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan’s participation in the 77th session of United Nations General Assembly, signifies a new page in relations ith the West and the USA. However, remarks by Godfrey in an interview regarding Sudan’s relations with Russia have met with sharp criticism from the Russian Embassy in Khartoum.
The newly appointed US Ambassador to Sudan, John Godfrey, says that the establishment of a civilian-led government is key to facilitating better US-Sudan cooperation. Ambassador Godfrey arrived in Khartoum to take-up office on yesterday as the first fully ranked US ambassador to the country in 25 years. On his first day in the post today, he met with Sudan’s acting Foreign Minister Dafallah El Haj Ali, for talks on US-Sudan relations.
The US Congress overwhelmingly approved a draft resolution on Thursday, condemning the October 25 military coup, and voicing support for the people of Sudan. It also demands that the military junta lift the State of Emergency and return the country to the path of democratic transition.
The US Senate has confirmed John Godfrey as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USA to Sudan. Sudan has been served by a deputy ambassador, so that Ambassador Godfrey, who is expected to take up his post in Khartoum within days, will be the first fully ranked US ambassador to Sudan in 25 years.
