doesn t make it american and doesn t mean donald trump isn t totally ignorant of the history of the word, nationalist. donald trump doesn t read books. i don t think any of this stems from donald trump studying the history of naziism or charles lindbergh or any of these other hateful trends. i think this comes from two places. one, is he s got steve bannon on his shoulder whispering in his ear and breitbart and steve bannon have been longtime tribunes for white nationalism. and trump has never hesitated to separate himself from those. remember, he was questioned probably three years ago about david duke. and whether or not he would disavow duke and the kkk and sort of backed away from that. the other thing to remember is he has a long history of race baiting. going back to the 1980s. during the central park jogger case. he jumped into the middle of that. he took out big page ads in the new york times, sensationalizing race to insert himself in a high-profile moment and make hay off
vermont. senator sanders, good to have you back on prime time. good to be with you, chris. the president just referred to what is happening in saudi arabia with the investigation of the journalist jamal khashoggi and what seems to be his death or his murder as another case of guilty until proven innocent like kavanaugh. that s what he is saying. you know, it is really hard to keep up with this president. is that really what he said? i didn t follow that. it just came out. i wouldn t make it up. you know, i don t know. i just don t know how to respond to that. here you have a guy who is a critic of the saudi government, walks in to the embassy in turkey, saudi embassy in turkey and disappears. and the turks are saying that he was killed. nobody has heard from him. and trump thinks this is a false
and then she fired back and not in a big way. bernie sanders, not easy to fluster. here s the question what did the president say that made him react like this you know, it is really hard to keep up with that really what he said i didn t follow that. what made him say that? fasten your seat belts. let s get after it. president trump wants the same standard for an authoritarian strong man that he does for his supreme court justices. he tells the ap the apparent murder of a washington post journalist is another case of someone being guilty until proven innocent. he continues to take the word of the saudi king and crown prince over a growing body of evidence including the latest cnn reporting that it was a high ranking officer in the saudi intelligence agency who oversaw
the accused. when it s a central park jogger case and you have a bunch of poor black kids, he says kill them. fair point. when he is taking babies away from their moms at the borders and they re muslim around the world, you know, they re guilty until proven isn t. he s very selective. it still goes along the basic thesis f you re weak or marginal, he has it in for you. but it doesn t matter how despicable you are, if you have nuclear weapons and you re kim jong-un or putin and you re anybody who is powerful eastern willing to abuse power, he has a soft part in his heart. i don t see any way for he could literally just say, chris, i am very concerned about what happened. this should not have happened. it looks very, very terrible. i don t know that it should upset the entire apple cart of the relationship.
