Center Point residents bring clean-up concerns to council

By Faith Callens CENTER POINT – On Thursday, May 20, the Center Point City Council met for a regular meeting at City Hall and heard from concerned residents. In other business, two resolutions were discussed, one to authorize funds for an employee team-building event and the other on a 2022 transportation application with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). During public comment, Resident Sharon Dunson said she was a first-time attendee of a council meeting and she came to meet and thank the council for their feedback and to address her neighborhood issues. “I’ve been here, lived here since ’89 and we have a non-thru circle and by the way, we need a sign,” said Dunson. “If y’all could help with this, I already called the Office of Transportation and Roads with Jefferson County and I have no idea if somebody was on the other end getting the message.”

By Faith Callens CENTER POINT – On Thursday, May 6, the Center Point City Council met for a regular meeting at City Hall. The feasibility study for a new police department and changes to one travel policy were discussed. During public comment, Center Point Fire Captain Busby reminded the public that the city’s fire district teaches CPR classes every third Thursday at 5 p.m. and that their smoke detector program is available to any residents in the area. Busby also encourages healthcare workers such as nurses, paramedics to check out the EMS challenge every Wednesday of each month. Local business Owner Jermaine Williams said he hopes to open a package store in Center Point because his friends and family realized that there was not a package store in the city.

Newest Linn County supervisor Louie Zumbach hopes to be rural voice

Louie Zumbach said he wanted to run for the Linn County Board of Supervisors years ago, but was persuaded to try for a seat in the Iowa House instead. “The House was never on my radar,” he said. “But one day, I was pushing snow and my phone rang. It was Speaker (Linda) Upmeyer and she asked me to run for District 95.” Zumbach went on to serve two terms in the House, from 2017 to 2019, as the Republican representative for District 95, which includes his home in Coggon, before running last year for county supervisor. He has also has served on the county’s planning and zoning board including as its chair, and was president of the county fair board.
