As i indicated during my visit to kenya the remarkable gains that country has made with a new constitution with its election cannot be jeopardized by restrictions on civil society. Likewise our hosts the ethiopians have much to be proud of. Ive been amazed at all the wonderful work thats being done here. Its true that the elections that took place here occurred without violence. As i discussed with the Prime Minister thats the start of democracy. I believe ethiopia will not fully unleash the potential of its people if unless are restrict or legitimate opposition groups cant participate in the campaign process. To his credit, the Prime Minister acknowledged that more work will need to be done for ethiopia to be a fullfledged, sustainable democracy. These are conversations we have to have as friends. Our topic is religious pacifist and the American Revolution. Often we think about military action, so perhaps a topic on pacifists or those who refuse to take military action is an interesting angle. But, let me begin by telling you about an incident that took place in april of 1778. This is the spring just after valley forge. 12 members of the church were arrested by local county official, they were brought to easton which was the county seat in North Hampton county in pennsylvania. They were paraded through the streets, tied together with ropes around their next like common criminals. We might be wondering what was their crime . Essentially their crime was the fact that their religious conviction prohibited them from joining the cause of independence and from pledging their loyalty to the new state of pennsylvania that would be formed.
