He hopes to create thousands of new jobs by taking steps to increase renewable energy production.
Now, the Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay says Northern Michigan may have an advantage when it comes time for those jobs to be filled.
The Watershed Center has worked with multiple contracting companies to install green infrastructure.
Program director, Sarah U’Ren say many of these companies are now preparing to start taking on more jobs that involve clean energy.
She says companies are already starting to see the benefit.
U’Ren says, “They got their feet wet so to speak doing these projects, they became better and better at them and I think that’s what’s going to happen with the clean energy. As it becomes more widely used people are going to become better at maintaining it building it and making it more energy efficient.”

The massive COVID relief bill includes $330 million in funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
Christine Crissman is the Executive Director of the Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay. She says it is great news for the Great Lakes State and its residents. “To be able to have something and have solid, sustainable funding for the next few years is a really, really big deal.”
One might argue it’s not COVID-related, but funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative found its way in front of Congress – by way of COVID Relief. Crissman says, “We heard some rumblings that this was going to be part of the Covid package. But to find that they approved it and at the levels of funding, it really doesn’t matter how it happened. But we’re just really excited that it did.”
