City officials say the FEMA site at the convention center will extend its hours and stay open until 7:30 p.m. The line outside the Pennsylvania Convention Center on Wednesday was nothing compared to just a couple of weeks ago when people struggled to find a vaccine in the city of Philadelphia.

WHYY By Theresa Barry had big plans for the month of March. Her son’s wife is pregnant, and she wanted to make it down to Florida in time for the gender reveal. She knew she didn’t want to fly without a COVID-19 vaccine, but as a senior with a heart condition, she figured she would get immunized right away. She had heard that some senior facilities were arranging for vaccination clinics right at their buildings through an independent pharmacy called Centennial. So Barry inquired with the management at her building, a 64-unit low-income independent senior center called Birchwood at Cedars Village in South Philadelphia, near the Italian Market.

On March 3, Archbishop Nelson Pérez visited residents of St. Francis Villa in the city’s Kensington section. Built by archdiocesan Catholic Housing and Community Services (CHCS), the $15 million site, which opened in 2016, offers 40 one-bedroom apartments to income-qualified seniors aged 62 and above.
