The Wendish are an interesting people who, despite never possessing an independent nation and having been surrounded by Germans, were able to maintain a unique identity.
Several miles south of Jefferson City lies an unincorporated community named for a stream that flows into the Moreau River. Honey Creek, which received its name from early settlers impressed by the many beehives found in the area, soon became the settlement for German immigrants who not only began to farm the area, but established a Lutheran Church shortly after the Civil War.
