Ross Giblin/Stuff Kāpiti Coast District Council is consulting on a new plan to replace a 38-year-old retaining wall in Paekākāriki. The cost of a seawall on the Kāpiti Coast has more than doubled over the past five years, with the Kāpiti Coast District Council planning to head back to the community to review its options. The current seawall at Paekākāriki was built in the 1970s, to last 25 years. Now 38-years-old, the wall failed in a 2016 storm surge and again during Cyclone Gita in 2018. Building a permanent, concrete wall was originally costed at $10.9 million in 2016, but now is expected to cost $27 million, the consultation document for the council’s Long Term Plan has revealed.
