Genea-Musings

Scores of genealogy and family history bloggers write thousands of posts every week about their research, their families, and their interests. I appreciate each one of them and their efforts. My criteria for Best of . are pretty simple - I pick posts that advance knowledge about genealogy and family history, address current genealogy issues, provide personal family history, are funny or are poignant. I don t list posts destined for daily blog prompts or meme submissions (but I do include summaries of them), or my own posts. Here are my picks for great reads from the genealogy blogs for this past week:

Augusta Genealogical Society: Find family history with a trip to the courthouse

Augusta Genealogical Society: Find family history with a trip to the courthouse Augusta Genealogical Society © Submitted Augusta Genealogical Society Why should you go to the courthouse for genealogy research when you can get it online? Well, not everything is online. When going to the courthouse, plan to spend the day and visit both the Probate Office and the Conveyance/Land Office. Be sure to bring your own supplies to include a way to make copies as well as plugs for charging equipment. Interesting and helpful documents can be found in both locations. Probate records and land and real estate documents are some of the most valuable records available to a genealogist. However, most people are hesitant to use them because they are intimidated by the legal divisions and just where to find what record.
