Die anhaltende Hitzewelle im Westen Kanadas hat nach Angaben der Behörden zu Hunderten Todesfällen beigetragen. Von Freitag bis Mittwoch seien in der Provinz British Columbia 486 plötzliche und unerwartete Todesfälle gemeldet worden, teilte die Gerichtsmedizin der Westküsten-Provinz am Mittwochnachmittag mit. Diese Zahl werde vermutlich noch steigen. Sie liege 195 Prozent über dem üblichen Durchschnitt eines vergleichbaren Zeitraums. Die Behörde geht davon aus, dass der starke Anstieg mit der extremen Hitze zusammenhängt.
