Pakistan Telecommunication Authority conducts QOS survey in South Waziristan Islamabad, February 10, 2021 (PPI-OT): Pursuant to Prime Minister’s visit to South Waziristan, instructions for restoration of data services of Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) in the district were issued on 20th January 2021. Subsequently, a joint QoS survey has been carried out by PTA along with CMOs, from 25th to 29th January 2021 in Wana, Azam Warsak, Kanni Kurram, Makin, Shakai, Sararogha, Tanaie and Tiarza areas of South Waziristan. According to the details, Jazz (2G and 3G) and Ufone (2G) services are currently available in these areas. As per the survey results, data services of Jazz were found in compliance with minimum license threshold whereas few of the voice and SMS KPIs of both licensees were found below the license standards in some of the surveyed areas. PTA is Planning to Make Off-Net Calls Even Cheaper The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has hinted at making off-net calls even cheaper by reviewing the Mobile Termination Rate (MTR). According to official documents, the MTR plays a critical role in protecting smaller players and automatically rationalizing retail tariffs, particularly for off-net calls. The changing market structure of the cellular mobile segment in Pakistan has necessitated a review of the existing MTR at the rate of 90 paisas per minute. ALSO READ The MTR is the amount that the receiving operator must charge when a call is made to another network. An MTR of 90 paisas per minute was determined in 2010 and no operator could charge less than it.

Telcos Earned Rs. 537.2 Billion and Contributed Taxes of Rs. 137 Billion in FY2020: PTA The Telecom sector in Pakistan withstood the impact of COVID-19 and showed sustainable revenues of Rs. 537.2 billion in the fiscal year 2019-20 (FY2020) as compared to Rs. 550.4 billion in FY2019. The sector also made a significant contribution of $622.5 million (24 percent) to the total net Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the country. This was revealed by the Annual Report 2020 released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Thursday. ALSO READ The sector’s contribution to the national exchequer also increased by 129 percent (Rs. 278.4 billion), owing to deposits of $687.8 million by Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) under license and spectrum renewal fee and a substantial increase in General Sales Tax (GST) and Withholding Tax (WHT), which remained suspended last year on the directions of the Honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan.

PTA to Hold a Quality of Service Survey for Telcos The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is planning to conduct a survey on the Quality of Service (QoS) during the first quarter of 2021, as per a press release issued by the authority on Wednesday. The survey will be conducted using an automated tool, with the objective to push the Cellular Mobile Operators (CMOs) to provide quality voice and data services in accordance with the license standards. This survey is the first of a series of surveys to be conducted throughout the year to measure the qualities of the voice and data service of the CMOs.
