candle factory destroyed by this tornado. brian, we just heard from the kentucky governor, what is the latest from him. reporter: as you heard, this is still a dynamic rescue situation going on in this part of mayfield also where you are. but here near the candle factory, they are still trying to sift through debris there. this scene behind me is not the candle factory, this is a complex not far from it. we are not allowed to gets a close to the candle factory as we want. but this is a warehouse, a company that manufactures cellphone towers. look at how it got leveled. they have a large shovel there trying to pick through some rubble, two shovels actually now. and this is kind of what these teams are up against. they have to move huge amounts of heavy debris and rubble just to try to get to possibly some people who could be trapped inside these buildings. this is the check point where resources have been coming in all morning to try to get to that candle factory which is
for investigators, centering around doug stewart and some mystery man in virginia. these points all represent cellphone towers. reporter: back in michigan, detective criger was checking doug s cell phone records, hoping to come up with some answers. reporter: what jumped out at you? anything obvious? the biggest part was three or four days just prior to venus disappearance, there were numerous calls, between 7 and 15 calls per day to and from doug, from one particular number. reporter: a constant phone-mate but the detectives also noticed a gap. the day before venus went missing, the cell phone was turned off. it didn t go back on until the next night. and then, all of a sudden, the calls start coming back to and from this same number. reporter: so the question becomes, who s at the other end of this phone call, huh? right. reporter: it was quick work finding out who the phone pal was. the calls were traced to the small town of bear, delaware to a young man named ric

facility in austin, investigators were pouring over surveillance video, trying to nail down who their specific was. and what we understand that was a key break in the case in that they were finally able to track this suspect to get surveillance video from this fedex facility. and all the day yesterday, authorities were very tight lipped about where their investigation was going. you notice in the last several weeks after there was an incident, the austin police chief would come out and give a whole lot of information just trying to get as much information from the public as they can. it appeared yesterday that investigators finally had something to go on when it comes to surveillance video, when it comes to tracking down perhaps cellphone towers. and they really had a lot to do yesterday afternoon into the night. and apparently now in the overnight hours we re learning that believed to be dead. we re waiting on information
survived, if they re just out of reach. talk about that if you would? reporter: well, we do know at one point more than 70 cellphone towers were destroyed in this fire. they ve got 67, 68 or even more at one point back up. so communications have vastically improved in this area. and what they believe people were missing because they couldn t get in contact with their loved ones. people left with only seconds to spare, so they had limited time to communicate with their loved ones. this will be a recovery effort that will be going into areas just like this one with cadaver dogs to see if they can find any sort of human remains. we ve all covered tornados and hurricanes and usually when people come back to devastation like this, there s something for them to pick through. but when you look after house and house like this, there s nothing here but soot and metal.
