hello and welcome to bbc news. the governor of mississippi has declared a state of emergency after tornadoes ripped through the us state. at least 25 people were killed. the authorities say the storm left a trail of damage for more than 150 kilometres. president biden has called the storms heartbreaking and vowed federal support. one of the worst affected towns is rolling fork, where entire neighborhoods were flattened to rubble. our north america correspondent, david willis, reports. this is all that remains of the mississippi town of rolling fork. heavy vehicles were picked up and tossed around like toys after the twister touched down, all but wiping this tight knit community off the map. we ve got a new scan coming on as we speak. the storm struck at night, the warnings too late for the residents of rolling fork and nearby silver city. sighs. oh, man. sighs. dearjesus, please help them. around 8:20, we have the tornado sirens going off, warning people to, you know, take co
their family history. so many individuals in this community wanted to keep it together thankful they re alive. 48 hours after this devastating tornado. recognizing so much has been lost in that time. brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers and children. all trying to pick up the pieces here after a tornado would change their lives within minutes. short time ago, i had a very emotional interview with the who lost her sister dolores in that tornado. you live in a town. you experienced that tornado. what was it like for you? what happened? it was scary. it was very scary. something i never experience my entire life. it was unexpected. shocking. without warning. nothing i would wish upon anybody. nothing i want to ever experience again. devastating. where did you and your husband seek safety in the town? we went from one end of our mobile home to the other and. we hid in our smallest bathroom on the floor. when you are on the floor in the bathroom, what are you hearin
a tornadoe has killed at least 23 people in the us state of mississippi, which is located here, in the south of the country. the authorities said twisters left a trail of damage for more than a hundred and fifty kilometres. one of the worst affected towns is rolling fork, where trees and power lines have been torn down. at one point, debris was being pulled more than six thousand metres into the sky. you can see here the latest pictures which have just come through to us, of the destruction in rolling fork. earlier i spoke to our correspondent frances read. 23 people at least have lost their lives. a large number. a trail of destruction of you said it is a km with up some are saying just think about of the debris was thrown 6000 metres into the air but possibly up to 9000 meters. that s almost 30,000 feet. tremendously frightening, whatever the official measurements eventually turn out to be. at the moment, as you ll see from the pictures, a total scene of destruction. trees

hello again. thank you for joining me again. i m fredricka whitfield. russia said it will suspend its participation in the grain export deal with ukraine. ukraine s foreign minister telling russia to stop its hunger games . nic robertson is in kyiv. nic, what s the significance of this move? reporter: this is very significant. russia says it has suspended the deal for an indefinite period. this was a deal that was struck by the u.n., two parallel deals, one with ukraine and one with russia, at the end of july. and it was struck because, since russia invaded ukraine, all the grain that ukraine produces, and it produces a lot for the world, was stuck in its ports on the black sea, piling up, nowhere to go. and the third world countries this grain was destined for desperately short of food. the prices were going up. after the deal was struck, the anticipation was about 20 million tons of grain could be shipped out of ukraine to these third world and other countries. now, wh
