Former Newport bowls club set to be brought back into use

Former Olde Oak Stave pub in Rogerstone to be demolished

Despite the planning committee approving the application there were several concerns raised by councillors in the meeting. Local ward member Cllr Yvonne Forsey said she had received concerns from residents about traffic movements and the visual impact of the development. Cllr Forsey queried in the meeting the number of traffic movements that the planning report said the development would generate in comparison to the former pub. She said: “If the pub had generated 49 cars between 5pm and 6pm daily then it would still be open. “The sort of traffic generated by the pub is completely different to the sort of traffic generated by 21 flats.”

If approved, the site would house 21 two-bed flats, of which six would be affordable housing. The 21 flats would be provided across three apartment blocks, and the development would have 50 car parking spaces across two locations. However, the council has received 64 representations and a petition with 39 signatures. A further seven representations were received following a consultation of amended plans in October 2020. Concerns were raised over access, increases in traffic and anti-social behaviour. In particular, concerns were raised about the traffic from the nearby Mount Pleasant Junior School, insufficient parking and inadequate traffic calming measures. The original proposal had 24 flats but this was reduced to 21 after concerns over scale.
