it will be having an improved display, front facing camera and video chat support. new zealand declared a state of emergencies in the wake of that devastating earthquake that lay most of its largest city to ruin. 80% of christchurch now has no water, no electricity. police put a nighttime curfew in effect to prevent looting. search dogs and heat-seeking cam rs are being used to locate some survivors. some have even been sending text messages from beneath the rubble. more than 300 are missing. at least 75 are dead and that death toll is expected to rise. nbc s george lewis joins me on the phone from christchurch. how does it look there to you, george? reporter: well, i ve been to a lot of earthquake sls, contessa. this is a scene of utter devastation in the central business district of christ church. in one building, the canterbury tv building, 100 people may be dead in the rubble including a group of japanese students who were going to a language school
in a situation like this, every minute counts. it people can t stay under that rubble for too much longer. and in addition, the rescue workers face the most daunting conditions because aftershock after aftershock continues to rock through this island. making the already unstable debris incredibly perilous for the work ersz. in fact, yesterday the police commissioner said that it was time to say no more at one particular site. the ctv building, and that was very distressing for some japanese citizens because there are some japanese citizens who are buried there in the rubble and they were hoping they could be released. the commissioner saying he is 100% certain no one at that site could still be alive. attention is turning to some other sites where they re hoping to find people in the rubble, meantime this island still deals with water problems, gas breaks, and all sorts of other issues as the aftershocks continue. sara, thank you.
