Three wins tonight including the Pelicans for the first time this season.

Kohl Stewart got his first start in the Cubs organization and was pretty darn dominating over five innings. He allowed one run on one hit and walk walk. He struck out nine. The one hit was a triple down the right field line, just like on Thursday night against Cory Abbott.
South Bend Cubs win season opener, 7-4 May 5, 2021
by Max Thoma, South Bend Cubs
SOUTH BEND, IN – For the first time in over 600 days, South Bend Cubs baseball returned to Four Winds Field on Tuesday night. Fittingly in dramatic fashion it was an eighth inning flurry that broke up a tie game and sealed the victory late into the night for the home team.
Peyton Remy started on the hill for South Bend and looked dominant in the early going, striking out the first two batters of the game and piling up five strikeouts in the first three frames. The right-hander from Parker, Colo. didn’t factor in the decision, going 4.2 innings and allowing two runs (one earned), scattering three hits, and striking out six batters.

Our second stop in our preview of the Cubs minor league system takes us to South Bend and the Cubs “new” High-A affiliate, the South Bend Cubs.
Please note that this preview is based on the Opening Day rosters that were announced last Friday. It’s actually common to see some changes in the roster before Opening Day, as players either get hurt or get healthy in the meantime. Or in the world that we live in these days, they could be in quarantine. Let’s hope that last one doesn’t happen, but it might.
There’s Going to be a Lot of Velocity from the High-A South Bend Cubs This Year
The South Bend Cubs also announced their preliminary 30-man roster on Friday morning, as new Cubs minor league manager Michael Ryan will lead the squad beginning at home on Tuesday night. The first thing that jumps out at me: there is a lot of 96+ MPH velocity here.
The velocity will be headlined in the rotation by 2019 first-round pick Ryan Jensen and darling of Cubs blogdom Max Bain. The bullpen will have it in spades with Burl Carraway and Brandon Hughes from the left side, Ben Leeper and Eury Ramos from the right side. And that won’t be it.

Prospect writers Kevin Goldstein and Eric Longenhagen will sometimes have enough player notes to compile a scouting post. This is one of those dispatches, a collection of thoughts after another week of college baseball, minor league spring training, and big league action. Remember, prospect rankings can be found on The Board.
Kevin’s Notes
John Baker, RHP, Ball State: 9 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 8K
When I saw John Baker’s line from Friday’s game against North Illinois, my first reaction was, “Wait a second, that John Baker?” It feels like he’s been part of the Redbirds’ weekend rotation since the Clinton administration, but in reality he’s a fifth-year senior with 60 games and over 300 innings on his college resume. He’s always been good, earning All-Conference awards and a couple of pre-season All-American mentions while compiling a 3.17 career ERA and more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings. In 2019, he was a 29th round pick of the Marlins; he was ov
