Junior biochemistry major participates in summer NSF-REU program \ Westminster College

A Westminster College junior biochemistry major spent 10 weeks this past summer working on computational simulations of the histone mRNA degradation complex at Duquesne University. Gabriella Hunter from New Baltimore, Mich., was chosen to participate in the Integrated Computational and Experimental Chemistry National Science Foundation-Research Experience for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) Program. Hunter worked in the biochemistry lab on the project “Role of 3'hExo in Histone mRNA Degradation” alongside Duquesne faculty members Dr. Rita Mihailescu and Dr. Jeffrey Evanseck, Westminster College Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Patrick Lackey, and graduate students Caylee Cunningham and Adam Kensinger. The team worked on creating a better understanding of the degradation process and learning the roles of every structure involved, testing to see how the 3’hExo interacts with the mRNA when it is degrading it. Gibson NEW SHARON — Colfax-Mingo s boys basketball team fell behind 15-0 after one quarter and couldn t recover during a 65-36 loss to North Mahaska on Friday night in South Iowa Cedar League play. Jake Nichols had 13 rebounds and scored five points, but the Tigerhawks just couldn t overcome their slow start. They trailed 35-10 at halftime and was outscored 22-4 in the third. Colfax-Mingo did win the fourth quarter 22-5. A.J. Gibson had eight points and three rebounds, Zach Steenhoek tallied eight points and two steals and Cole Bracewell chipped in five points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Tigerhawk hoops split with BGM, girls get first win

By Newton News Expand Kyra Lester COLFAX — A big second half propelled Colfax-Mingo s girls basketball team against BGM on Tuesday night. The Tigerhawks and Bears were tied at halftime, but Colfax-Mingo outscored BGM 29-14 in the second half to win 47-32 at home during South Iowa Cedar League play. Colfax-Mingo (1-4 overall, 1-3 in conference play) held BGM to single-digit scoring in all four quarters. The Tigerhawks put in 18 points in the fourth to pull away. It was a three-point game after three quarters. Brennan Rhone led all scorers with 16 points, Abi Rawlins scored 11 points and Kyra Lester finished with six points, 12 rebounds, three assists and six steals. Carley Underwood tallied eight points, six boards, seven assists and three steals.
