Head coach Traevonne Smith had confidence in his relay squads even before the season started. That trust was given a boost last Friday when Missouri Military Academy’s runners finished second in the 4x100 and 4x200 events at the Cunningham Invitational in Louisiana. The Colonels’ Gabriel Canonico took silver in the 300 meter hurdles, chased closely by Gage Gibson of Van-Far. Community R-6’s Victoria DiSalvo picked up a second in the girls 300 hurdles while teammate Paige Meyer tied for the second spot in high jump.

The equation was offense plus defense plus ball movement times team chemistry. And when Van-Far put all of it together on Friday, they proved unbeatable, downing Silex at home 55-35. Led by DJ Long, the Indians scored 39 points by halftime. They scored in the paint and forced turnovers. They outmanned Silex under the glass. “Tonight we set the tone early on both ends of the floor,” said coach Pat Connaway. “It was nice to perform well in front of a big crowd. The kids really fed off the energy of our student section.”

Down by a single point with just 17 ticks on the clock, Van-Far called a time out to set up a potential game-winner against Canton at the Palmyra Tournament on Thursday. The Indians got the ball in and began to move the ball, searching for a lane. But a turnover at the wrong moment put an end to their aspirations. Canton translated this into a lay up and the ballgame, 62-59. “Despite all the issues throughout the game we still had a chance to win,” said Van-Far head coach Pat Connaway. “We just didn’t execute enough down the stretch and didn’t get stops when we needed them.”

The Bulldogs left no doubt from the start they would take advantage of Van-Far’s struggles.
Nothing went right for the Eagles. Shots clanged off the rim or were blocked by the taller Mexico defenders. Turnovers became fast break opportunities for the home side.
By the time Van-Far’s Preston Burnett converted one of two from the line midway through the second quarter, six Bulldogs were on the board and Mexico had run up a telescopic 30-1 lead on their way to a 77-23 drubbing in the final game of Saturday’s Gary Filbert Classic at the MHS Sports Complex.
