Catharine Young, executive director of the New York State Center of Excellence for Food and Agriculture at Cornell AgriTech and a former New York state senator representing Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties, will present the keynote address during Jamestown Community College’s virtual commencement ceremony May 14.
A longtime champion of agriculture and economic development, Young was named to her current post in March 2019, and oversees a business hub that connects startups and established food, beverage and agriculture technology companies with the resources they need to succeed.
Prior to her role at Cornell, Young served for 20 years in the New York State Legislature representing Western New York. A passionate voice for rural communities, she rose to a top leadership post in the state Senate and made history when she became the first woman to chair the powerful Senate Finance Committee. Lake Shore Bancorp, Inc., the holding company for Lake Shore Savings Bank, announced today that Catharine M. Young has been appointed to the company’s board of directors. Young is currently the executive director of the New York State Center of Excellence for Food and Agriculture at Cornell University’s AgriTech Center, a position she has held since March 2019. Prior to this, she served for 20 years in the New York State Legislature as a senator and assemblywoman.
As a senator for 14 years, Young represented Western New York’s 57th District, which included Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany and part of Livingston counties. She was a trailblazer, becoming the first woman to chair the Senate’s Standing Committee on Finance – the second-highest rank in the Senate. She also chaired the Committee on Housing, Construction and Community Development, making her uniquely valuable to Lake Shore Bancorp and its consumer and commercial business teams.
The Cattaraugus County Industrial Development Agency updated its eligible projects policy earlier this week in a way that could impact the proposed $455 million Alle-Catt Wind Farm. The IDA Board of Directors was already working under a 2018 directive from the Cattaraugus County Legislature not to grant tax breaks to large industrial turbine projects.
