LEWISTOWN, Ill. - 4-H is the youth education program of University of Illinois Extension. Through 4-H there are several local scholarships available.
These scholarships go to current Fulton County 4-H members who actively participate in 4-H events, and who have shown great accomplishments through 4-H. This year Fulton County 4-H presented scholarships to eight graduates from four area high schools.
Five scholarships were awarded from funds donated in memory of Hilda Rock, a long-time 4-H leader from the Cuba area, by her family. Receiving $500 each were Lydia Curless, Kendra Hartstirn, Max Johnson, Jenna Spangler, and Audrey Tarochione.
Max Johnson also received the Merle L. Jenkins Memorial Agricultural Scholarship of $150. Merle L. Jenkins, a 1939 graduate of the University of Illinois (B.S. Ronna Cotton, mammography tech, helps a patient at Diagnostic Imaging -West Houston
Cathy Phillips Chelin, a retired nurse from West Houston, found a strange lump in her breast in December. She had a routine mammogram a few months earlier that yielded normal results, but her mind automatically went to the worst.
Cathy Phillips Chelin and her husband Hartley. I was thinking and thinking, what could this be? Chelin said. Is it lymphoma? Is it some form of cancer?
Her nurse practitioner recommended coming back in for another mammogram and ultrasound. The images again showed no abnormalities in the breast, but several lymph nodes in the left underarm area, also known as the axilla, were unusually large.
Since I started broadcasting from home, I ve received dozens of emails asking for more information about the map, but sadly I just didn t have anything to share. It was a hand-me-down map from NEWS CENTER Maine s Hannah Dineen, who claimed she had an abundance of maps of Maine already in her home and wanted this one to find a good home.
But all of that changed when I connected with Phillips Jewitt and learned of her efforts to keep the legacy of her grandfather alive. I ve always wanted to kind of unearth all of the information I can find about Gus s life and his art, said Phillips Jewitt.
