is catholicism grows. yeah. this is an opportunity to show the vibrancy of this church. there s a lot of positive stories, of hopeful stories, people engage in really positive charity work, people living out their faith and this is an opportunity for pope francis to see this firsthand and for the world to see the catholic church in the united states is a strong, vibrant community. the weird picture you just saw is madison square garden with the lights down. we re boosting it a little bit electronically but the pictures are dark in there and the pope is arriving. live pictures i believe of the pope arriving outside. oh, that s a uni lat, but the pope is arriving at madison square garden. i ve just seeing it on a local channel. if we can go back to that big map that we were showing you earlier, the google map that we got, see the red lines along the east side of manhattan. these red lines along the east
don t think in terms of left or right or conservative or liberal. they think about what the gospel teaches, what justice demands, what human dignity requires. and so to try to put him in or to exploit him for one political pearl that is just wrong. it is not accurate. it is no the true. so i think some of the people are probably disappointed this week are toes who said, predicted that he would be paddling on the left side of the canoe. no, he has a broad agenda. he feels very strongly about a wide range of issues. and he may emphasize different issues in different venues because of different audiences. rest assured of the he is, he is committed on many issues. i think you re going to find beginning next week more energized catholic church in the united states. catholics will be more involved in society, whether they re for pro-life or the family or for the environment or charity or
things the catholic church does so well in this city. it s schools. he will be with young people. the mass at madison square garden tomorrow will invoke memories of that extraordinary scene there with john paul ii in 1979. cardinal said in his column last week that he urged the pope to come to our schools because catholic schools do a terrific job particularly for under privileged kids and he wanted the pope to be experience of that. he is visiting go ahead. i m sorry. i was just going to say in all of this i hope the pope is enjoying getting a taste of the vitality of the catholic church in the united states. churches had a rough patch in recent years. the pope addressed that
i m brooke baldwin. more on the pope s historic trip to the united states. to my colleague chris cuomo. reporter: we are at catholic university in washington. this is the only university in the country that was founded by the bishops. it will be the site of a big canonization mass today that is not without controversy. but it be clear, this is a huge day and not just huge in catholic history but u.s. history. the pope bringing washington to a standstill. we re moments away from the pope s first u.s. mass again right here at catholic university, the basilica behind us. the basilica, that word doesn t predict architecture. it s a designation by the church of special importance. that has heightened importance for the mass today. the pontiff is supposed to be here any money minute. we should expect more of this on the way, the waving, kissing babies, the jeep wrangler pope-mobile he s wroo riding
and the ability that he has to bring a lot of people together. especially with us, all of us are really excited to see him. i think a lot of people are excited to be in his presence and be able to stand with him. reporter: pope francis wants to attract more young people to the church. when the pope talks about things like social justice and climate change, does that resonate? absolutely. like my we re always talking about in the classroom today we have to look to the future and think about that as well. and the fact that the pope is here at our university it feels great. we re honored to have him here. reporter: thank you all very much. i appreciate it. chris, earlier today when the pope was in that parade along constitution avenue, i talked to a lot of young catholics who call themselves lapse catholics who say because of pope francis they may come back to the church. who knows? we ll see what happens after the pope s visit wraps up next week. reporter: you know, in
