Munson Creek Fire grows rapidly due to hot and dry conditions

Residents of Fairbanks and the area likely noticed a haze of smoke Thursday morning over the region. The smoke is from the approximately 2,000-acre Munson Creek Fire, which is burning about four miles south of Chena Hot Springs. The fire is expected to continue to grow and produce more smoke over the next few days. After showing little growth over the past week, the Munson Creek Fire became more active Wednesday afternoon due to warm and dry conditions. The fire, which had been smoldering for several days, “started expanding quickly,” fire information officer Cathie Tordoff said. She said that, based on the forecast, they predicted that the expansion would occur.
