Today, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) announced the selection of the 2020 Hanna Gray Fellows, a cohort of 21 early career researchers who are taking on some of the biggest challenges in the life sciences, such as understanding the innerworkings of the brain or the complexities of the immune system. By unlocking basic principles, their work could one day ease symptoms in patients with chronic pain, treat kids suffering from pediatric leukemia, and spark new therapeutics for emerging infectious diseases.

Nominations can be submitted online today through April 1, 2021. While self-nominations are prohibited, anyone may nominate another person. The nomination forms and rules are available at breakthroughprize.org.
For the 10th year, the Breakthrough Prize, recognized as the world s largest science prize, will honor top scientists, handing out three prizes in Life Sciences, one in Fundamental Physics and one in Mathematics. Seeing my fascination, my parents took us to look for fossils in the caves near where we lived. Once we found some bones and teeth, which turned out to be from ancient cave bears. What a thrill! We were discovering something that had been there for thousands of years and that nobody in modern times had seen before. After that, I became very interested in discovery.
The other important thing about my childhood was that our house had literally thousands of books of all kinds. There were books in all the rooms, in the corridors. I read many novels âDostoevsky; Tolstoy; all of Proust, which I must have read five times.
