Apparently, Britain was lashed by “hurricane force winds” on Sunday night. How do I know? Because I read it on the news. I presume this conclusion was reached by taking the highest gust speed recorded by the Met Office – 99 mph at Brizlee Wood in Northumberland – and comparing it with the minimum wind speed used to define a category 1 hurricane, which is 74 mph. Given that 99 is higher than 74 then, bingo, Britain suffered hurricane force winds.
Strengthening Tropical Storm Otis is expected to become a hurricane before reaching the southern coast of Mexico near Acapulco, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.
Hurricane Tammy strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane late Friday morning, according to the National Hurricane Center, triggering fresh Hurricane Warnings for several of the northern Leeward Islands.
