Castro Pedro Pan News Today : Breaking News, Live Updates & Top Stories | Vimarsana

Commentary: Stuck at home but traveling the world

Print I have not been out of San Diego County since February 2020 and not out of my house more than a couple of days a week for essential errands. However, I have traveled many places, thanks to good books and interesting authors. One place I went was to Cuba, the Cuba of the 1950s, which meant I time-traveled as well. My companion was Carlos Eire, who grew up there, escaped through Castro’s Pedro Pan emigration program and wrote the book “Waiting for Snow in Havana.” Yes, he lived the life of a rich man’s child, but it seems that rich men’s children had a lot of freedom in those days. They roamed the streets, sometimes coming across horrific events, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, hiding from Castro’s soldiers. They took themselves to the beach on the bus. They discovered an empty house with an indoor swimming pool. They declared war on iguanas.
